One arrested as Rivers abducted monarch regains freedom

The police in Rivers State has confirmed the release of HRM, Aaron Ikuru, the king of Ikuru town in Andoni local government area of the state, disclosing that a suspect was arrested in connection with the monarch’s abduction five weeks ago.

The State Commissioner of Police, Eboka Friday in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, said the monarch, who abducted on 21/2/2021 from his home town Ikuru, was rescued from a forest after a collaborative search was launched with the Nigerian Navy.

CP Friday said as a result of pressure mounted, the kidnappers might have fled, abandoning their ‘big catch’, while a suspect, Wariboko Basoene, who was arrested in the course of intense manhunt, led the search party to the forest location where the monarch was rescued unhurt.

“The Rivers State Police Command hereby confirms the unconditional release of HRM, Aaron Ikuru, the Okama of Ikuru in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“The Monarch was released last night at a forest in Abissa, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area (also in Rivers), where he had been held captive for a month now. His release was as a result of a robust synergy with the Navy, where through collaborative efforts, both Agencies from inception, worked relentlessly and with the aid of technical assistance, among other measures led to his release.

“In one of such pressures, the King’s clothes and hat were recovered at a creek, while one Wariboko Basoene was arrested. In the course of Investigation, the suspect who made useful confessions to the Police finally led the Operatives to a forest in Abissa, where the Monarch was eventually rescued, unhurt,” the statement read.
