Sanwo-Olu seeks education policy that produces self-reliant graduates

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, said it had become expedient to reposition the nation’s education policy to target the delivery of employable graduates.

The governor, who spoke at the opening of the 67th National Council on Education meeting held in Lagos, called on stakeholders in the education sector to “work at ensuring self-reliant youths are produced through the state and national educational system.”

Represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Sanwo-Olu said, “It has become expedient to reposition the education policy by making and implementing a strategy to deliver graduate students who will blend with the labour market demands.”

He added, “The theme of the NCE meeting, ‘Addressing the challenges of policy implementation: A panacea for the achievement of Education 2030 Agenda,’ is an avenue to co-create and collaborate towards enhancing quality of teaching and learning that would provide more refined educational models and proffer lasting solutions to the challenges of policy formulation in the education sector.”

Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Andrew Adejo, called on stakeholders in the education sector to build a system that delivers a strong foundation for lifelong learning and use education as a tool for national development.

Adejo, who was represented by the Director, Educational Planning and Research and Development in the ministry, Mrs Anigbogu Uju, said, “When policies that guide a nation are not implemented at the appropriate time, the consequences are backwardness, under-development, unemployment for graduates, poverty, insecurity, etc.

“However, to tackle the challenges of policy implementation, all hands must be on deck.”
