Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has traveled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, sources confirmed. The 69-year-old minister departed Abuja for Lagos on Monday night via a commercial flight before boarding a British Airways flight to London.
Presidency officials had initially stated that Edun was recovering at his Abuja residence under the care of Nigerian doctors, dismissing rumors of a stroke or incapacitation. A senior official, speaking anonymously, noted that Edun’s condition was being closely monitored and that foreign medical care might be recommended if necessary—a decision now confirmed. Another official emphasized that President Bola Tinubu is attentive to Edun’s health but has no plans to replace him.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, previously confirmed Edun’s illness but said he was receiving treatment in Nigeria. The Presidency also debunked speculations of a replacement for the minister, appointed on August 16, 2023, and sworn in on August 21, 2023.
Due to his condition, Edun will miss the 2025 World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C
