Accident: Masari cautions against ‘covert settlement’ by NCS

Governor Aminu Masari, on Tuesday cautioned families of victims of last Monday’s ghastly accident in Jibia, where 10 people died and fifteen others sustained injuries, not to accept any covert enticements from the Nigerian Customs Service.

He assured them government was doing everything possible to ensure that the families of those dead and those injured get justice through legal means.

The Governor made the declaration when he paid condolence visit to the affected families in Jibia.

He said, “Do not succumb to any covert enticement from the customs service, no matter what they offer or promise to do for you.

“Whatever they want to do for you, let it be in the open, not in secret.

“If you accept any secret offer, then you will be truncating government’s efforts to seek justice for you, but if you resist any untoward move, the organisation will then have to rethink its attitude towards its host community.”

Governor Masari also called on the people in the areas prone to the activities of bandits in the state to acquire weapons and defend themselves against them ( the bandits).

The Governor said it was morally wrong for people to submit meekly to the bandits without any attempt to defend themselves, noting that security is everybody’s business.

According to him, it is the people’s meek submission that emboldens the bandits to continue with their heinous activities with murderous frequency, adding that people must free their minds of the notion that security is the sole responsibility of the government.

All these were contained in a statement by the Governor’s Director General (Media), Abdul Labaran Malumfashi, made available to newsmen in Katsina on Tuesday evening.
