Rescue abducted senator, Akwa Ibom APC urges DSS, police

The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has tasked security agencies in the state including the Department of State Services and the police to trail the perpetrators behind the kidnap of ex-senator Nelson Effiong and rescue him alive.

Effiong, a chieftain of the APC in the state and the immediate past senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial district, was abducted in his sit-out in Uyo, the state capital on Sunday by suspected armed men.

It was gathered that they stormed the vicinity about 9pm and shot sporadically into the air to scare away people before abducting their victim.

According to sources, several people were said to have been injured in the stampede caused by the hoodlums during the abduction.

The APC in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Nkereuwem Enyongekere on Tuesday said the party is worried and distress over the incident.

The statement read in part, “Our party has been very worried and distressed to learn of the kidnap of Sen. Nelson Effiong, one of our strong Chieftains who is also the immediate past Senator representing Akwa Ibom South (Eket) Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State.

“Today, the Caretaker Committee Chairman Dr. Ita Udosen has on behalf of the party urged the DSS, the Nigerian Police Force and other security outfits in the state to urgently swing into action to bring him back home safely while ensuring that those behind this dastardly act are made to face full wrath of the law.

“The party, therefore, advises Sen. Effiong’s family and the general public to liberally provide useful information to the security agencies to aid his rescue from the kidnappers’ den.

“The party will do everything in its power to secure Senator Effiong’s release while enjoining all our party faithful to continue to pray for his safe return to his family and our APC fold soonest.”
