I regret being caught on camera smoking cigarette — Don Jazzy

Popular music producer and the Chief Executive Officer of Mavin Records, Michael Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, says that the most disappointing act in his career was when he was caught on camera smoking cigarettes.

Don Jazzy stated this during an interview with a former Big Brother Naija contestant, Doyinsola David. He said, “I remember the first time people saw that I used to smoke cigarettes; not anymore though, but I used to smoke. I did not think it was anything bad. I think it was at a concert. I was being recorded, and I was trying to adjust my eyeglass. In the process of adjusting the glasses, my cigarettes showed. My (social media) timeline went agog. It just felt like a religious figure being caught watching porn; that was how it felt.”

Don Jazzy also reiterated that his altercation with rapper and YBNL boss, Olamide, at the 2015 Headies Awards, was out of character for him.

“That action was out of character, and I realised it instantly I got off the stage after saying it. Of course, I apologised to both Olamide and the organisers of the Headies Awards.”

Meanwhile, Mavin Records celebrated last month’s International Women’s Day with a series of women-led initiatives.

One of the activities was a boot camp for 15 female creatives, consisting of independent artistes, sound engineers, songwriters and producers. During the boot camp, the participants were exposed to state-of-art facilities and facilitators in partnership with AudioGirl Foundation, led by Febe Adedamola.

The company also held its annual Mavin IWD Soiree, providing a creative, fun and safe space for women in the entertainment industry to gather and discuss the issues that affect them collectively, and birth solutions.

This was even as the record label partnered with music streaming platform, Spotify, to thrill guests with performances from artistes such as Qing Madi, Crayon and Magixx.

Spotify also led a masterclass and a panel session, where female executives discussed and spearheaded DigitAll—Innovation and the Importance of Tech in the Music Business.
