    NAFDAC DG reveals source of Kano strange ailment

    The Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has presented the result of the preliminary clinical test of chemical substances causing strange ailment in the state.

    Adeyeye made the presentation at the Government House in Kano during her courtesy visit to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

    He revealed, “There are five substances involved in this development. Out of the five substances, only three were registered, while the remaining two were not registered.

    “We still wonder how they came into the country as our investigation revealed that they were not imported into the country through our ports.

    “Some of those substances are poisonous. When one takes them, he or she would find it very difficult to breathe normally, which is close to death.”

    According to her, NAFDAC is taking the issue seriously, and there are six Directorates engaged in figuring out a coherent and scientific explanation to it.

    “The substances have citric acid. We also visited two companies that have the registered substances, but we have however put them on hold to avoid running into a hitch until after our examination,” she explained.

    Adeyeye, who promised to present the final result to the state government, however, commended the effort of the acting Managing Director of the state Consumer Protection Council, Baffa Dan Agundi, over his commitment to fighting the marketing of the poisonous substances and other fake and counterfeit drugs flooding the state.

    In a press statement by Abba Anwar, the Chief Press Secretary, Ganduje assured them of his administration’s commitment towards partnering with NAFDAC in specified areas, so as to keep our state and the nation in general safer and healthier.

    Ganduje added that the source of the substances was known to authorities, saying, “While we arrested many consignments, we are still combing our markets thoroughly.”
