EFCC demands Ogun Assembly financial records, probes alleged fraud

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has begun the probe of Ogun State House of Assembly over alleged financial misappropriation.

THE PUNCH learnt that the anti-graft agency had written to the Assembly, asking for information on all budget appropriations and allocations of the House from May 30, 2015 to date.

The Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, confirmed this on Sunday while featuring on a radio programme, Sunday Morning Live on FM.

Oluomo disclosed this while responding to a question from one of the listeners on whether it was true that the EFCC was about to probe the state Assembly.

The Speaker replied in the affirmative, saying the EFCC letter was received during the recent parliamentary workers strike.

He, however, hinted that the EFCC’s move might be as a result of a petition from a member of the House of Assembly.

Though the Speaker did not mention who the petitioner was, our correspondent gathered that the former deputy speaker, Dare Kadiri, had petitioned the EFCC.

Speaking on the letter from the EFCC, Oluomo stated, “They (EFCC) are asking for information from 2015; I wasn’t at the helms of affairs since 2015 to 2019. We are given a specific amount of moneyb for our salaries and allowances.

“We don’t take anything more than that. And it is the same amount which the House had been collecting since 2015 that we are still collecting now; the same with allowances. We don’t have the money to squander in the House.”
