Gunmen kill policeman in Ebonyi community

Some heavily-armed men on Tuesday stormed a community in Ebonyi State, shooting intermittently and robbing business outfits.

The hoodlums numbering five arrived in Onueke in Ezza South local government area with AK47s, pump action and other weapons, The Nation learnt.

Sources said some of them came on motorcycles, others in a black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

A policeman was gunned down in the attack, while another person was shot but it was unclear if the second person died or survived the attack.

It was also not clear how the policeman was killed, as there were conflicting reports of the incident.

A source said the assailants were trailing a man, whom they shot near a commercial bank, a development that set customers and staff fleeing for safety.

Another source claimed that the man was hit by a stray bullet, and was not the target.

The gunmen reportedly robbed some businesses in the area.

One of those businesses was a provision store where they carted away some drinks.

“They entered the shop and collected two cartons of drinks including hot drinks,” a source told the reporter.

The Nation reliably gathered that police and military officers arrived at the scene and engaged them in a shootout, forcing them to flee.

Commissioner for Internal Security, Stanley Emegha confirmed the incident.

He said a policeman was killed in the attack.
