‎Anambra poll: Obidients back Moghalu, vow to resist rigging

The Obidient Movement, the followership of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Friday kicked off its campaign in support of former National Inland Waterways Authority boss, George Moghalu, ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.

‎Speaking at a press conference held at Moghalu’s campaign office in Awka, the National Coordinator of the group, Dr Yunusa Tanko, warned that any attempt to manipulate the polls would be resisted.

‎Tanko disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

‎Tanko also declared that their members are “fully on ground” across all 5,720 polling units in the state and ready to defend the people’s mandate.

‎“Let it be stated unequivocally that the Obidient family is fully on ground in every part of Anambra State. We have completed the inauguration of our polling unit commanders across all polling units in the state,” Tanko said.

‎The Obidient leader said the movement had deployed what he described as “robust mechanisms and digital technologies” to prevent any form of rigging or manipulation, stressing that “the era when results were written in back rooms is over.”

‎“This generation of Nigerians, this generation of Obidients, will not allow the old order of electoral malpractice to thrive again,” he warned.

‎Tanko maintained that the group remained united and disciplined behind Moghalu’s candidacy, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to act impartially and security agencies to ensure voters’ safety.

‎“We call on INEC to remain impartial and professional, and we warn that any compromise of the process will be resisted through lawful and democratic means,” he said.

‎While assuring Anambra residents of the movement’s vigilance, Tanko said their volunteers, women, and youth structures had been trained to monitor every stage of the process, from accreditation to result transmission.

‎“A new Anambra is possible, and together, we will make it happen,” he declared.

‎The November 8 governorship election will mark the end of Governor Charles Soludo’s first term in office under the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

‎The contest is expected to be fiercely competitive, with major parties including the Labour Party, the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party and APGA itself, all eyeing control of the strategic South-East state — widely regarded as Peter Obi’s political stronghold
