On October 16, 2025, bandits ambushed and killed eight security personnel, including policemen and members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guard (CPG), known as ‘Askarawa,’ along the Funtuwa-Gusau road in Zamfara State. A security official confirmed the attack to SaharaReporters.
Governor Dauda Lawal mourned the loss in a statement, saying, “We received the news with great sadness that bandits ambushed a police convoy and our Community Protection Guard personnel, killing eight officers. May Allah grant mercy to them and patience to their families.” He called for an end to the security challenges plaguing Zamfara and Nigeria.
The same morning, bandits stormed a mosque in Maradawa, Gusau Local Government Area, abducting several worshippers during Subhi prayers, fleeing into a nearby forest. The attack caused widespread panic, with efforts underway to secure the victims’ release.
No official statement from security agencies or the state government has been issued regarding the mosque attack. On September 26, 2025, a similar assault in Yandoto, Tsafe Local Government Area, killed five worshippers and abducted others.
